Commenting.

21 Sep

Like most bloggers (or I guess, people who blog…as I don’t think of myself as a “blogger”, let alone a “mommy blogger”), I adore comments.  Feeling that something I said or a picture I took made an impression on someone enough for them to take the time to post a comment makes my heart get all warm and fuzzy.

When I see people return to make several comments?  Makes me even happier.

My blog is setup to send me an email whenever I get a comment.  It’s also setup so I can hit reply and it adds a threaded reply to the comment.  I then also add in the email address of the commentor (commentator?  commentar?) to that email so it gets emailed out to them as well.

My question is, is this annoying?  Does my “Thank you!” email bother you by filling your email box?  Would you rather I just comment on my website?  I love the connection I feel by being able to email you if you comment, but I also don’t want to scare anyone away or make it feel like I’m bothering you.

So what say you, internets?  Do you like it or not?  Do you even care?

If you don’t care, here’s a cute baby to distract you.

I don’t find it annoying at all. I actually really appreciate it. It saves me the effort of having to check back multiple times to see if anyone replied to my comment. I also enjoy the feeling that the person behind the blog is actually interacting with the readers, not just taking the comments. So thank you for it!

Oh good. I’m glad that its working for you! I really enjoy emailing back, especially seeing what people have as their email addresses, and it’s always really nice too when I get an email BACK. I feel that connection, which to me, has been the whole main reason to blog.

Well, that and to show other people pictures of my beautiful daughter…I think my real life people are sick of it!

I like it! I love comments and replying to them, so your replies dont bother me one bit 🙂 I was going to ask you how you set it up, but I see now that you use wordpress, so its probably different from blogger. Oh, well, I guess that means some googling for me 🙂

    • mrssoup September 21, 2009 at 3:06 pm #

Oh good! I am so glad. I’ll just have to keep doing it then. 😉

And yes, blogger is different, but I think I remember having someone do a similar thing from their blogger account, so it might be possible! Good luck!

      May your google-fu be strong!

    She’s PRECIOUS!!

Regarding proper email/commenting ettiquette…hmmmm. I’ve wondered this myself. I don’t mind at all receiving emails that say “Thank you”. In fact, I like to have my email/message/comment acknowledged. I don’t see how it could bother people; a “Thank you” email is quick to read and then, click delete. No problem. I don’t know about having the “thank you” on your comment thread, but then I have not yet figured out how to both email and have it part of my thread (probably because I’m Blogger and not WordPress??).

OK, now let’s talk about comment length etiquette! 😉

Awww, good. I’m glad. Then I will continue to do so. And ha to the comment length etiquette. 😉 I love having long comments myself. It gives me more to reply to as well as more to get to know my readers. 🙂

So thank you for the long comment.

I often subscribe to comments so I can see the exchange between other readers, the author, etc.

    • mrssoup September 22, 2009 at 8:01 am #

Good to know! Thank you, kind sir. 🙂

I like the email reply. It makes the commentors feel good too! I don’t always check back to see if someone has left a comment after me or in response to something I wrote. I think I need to get this figured out on my blog too. Very cute baby pic!!

Good! I hope that blogger has something like it, there have been a couple people that want to do it…

It makes me angry that I don’t have the option to enable threaded comments! I used to painstakingly copy and paste email addresses from the email box in the comments into my email but I got REALLY tired of having to answer the “and who are you and why are you emailing me” emails from people.

    So I stopped.

You seriously need to get the template that lets you do it! It’s amazing and with the reaction people have been giving me, I totally love it.

I think if I comment in my own comments to you, it emails you letting you know. I am not sure though. I have often wondered if I should switch back to plain Google to be able to email ppl directly.

Either way, whatever works for you mama! 🙂

    • mrssoup September 22, 2009 at 11:44 am #

I think so…I’m trying to remember. Oh wait, no, I remember. You have the Disqus plugin, which automatically sets up the subscription to all the comments.

i definitely appreciate the thank you emails! i just wish i had time to do it for my commentators, but alas i do not. but i appreciate the ones i get.

    • mrssoup September 22, 2009 at 4:28 pm #

Awesome! I am so glad. Then I will keep bugging you!

She IS cute! And I appreciate replies to comments, so I know that the person got it! But, I’m not good at replying to people. I am selfish, apparently! HA!

    • mrssoup September 23, 2009 at 7:59 am #

Ahahaha, selfish is okay! And as long as I’m not bothering you, then I will continue to allow you to be selfish. 😉

Can’t say that I have this particular problem because I’m a new blog. But I DO want to say that your pictures ROCK!!

    • mrssoup September 23, 2009 at 7:58 am #

Awwww, thank you! And with the beautiful entries that you have been writing, you will have that problem soon. I cried at the letters to your son. Beautiful. Thank you!

Comments are like, the bread and butter to a blog.

    It’s WHY WE BLOG.

Well, that and to rant whenever we feel like it. 🙂

    • mrssoup September 23, 2009 at 7:51 am #

Too true. Especially the rant part…

  12. kbreints September 23, 2009 at 8:06 am #

Nope– don’t mind that at all!! I think it is nice to acknowledge a comment– wish I could figure out how to do that on mine?!

    • mrssoup September 23, 2009 at 8:07 am #

I’m thinking Blogger doesn’t allow it….since everyone that has it has wondered about it….

  13. Jen September 25, 2009 at 6:31 pm #

The reply emails do not bother me one bit. I think it is sweet that you take the time to do that.

With that said, I also feel like I need to mention that I never expect or look for a reply from a fellow blogger when I leave a comment (well, maybe if I ask a direct question) because I know that most of us are busy with our families and there are only so many hours in a day. I think it is nice and I like the interaction aspect of it, but I’m not sure that I would be able to keep up with it. I prefer trying my best to hop around and visit my commenter’s blogs when I have some free time (sorry I haven’t been by in awhile–it has been very busy since school started back up).

    Cute pic!!

    • mrssoup September 27, 2009 at 12:46 pm #

      Thank you for the input!

And yes, I don’t expect it either. I know everyone is busy, in fact, I wouldn’t be able to do all that I do if I didn’t have access at work. So anytime I get a note from someone I feel special too.

And hey, I personally would rather you post on your blog than comment on mine! Since I love your posts.
